Theologian's Corner: Aquinas on Truth
Nicknamed the Angelic Doctor (due to his gift of perfect chastity), Thomas Aquinas' pursuit of the truth became a methodological standard of inquiry in philosophy and theology. Disputatae de Veritate is an extensive corpus covering many questions, disputes and difficulties on the matter of truth. It is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking a deep look into this timeless topic. As a matter of introduction, Aquinas in Question 1 defines truth, identifies a hierarchy of truths, and discusses how truth is discovered and revealed. It is very similarly structured to Summa Theologica, in the form of question, responses, "on the contrary", answers to difficulties. A thought question for the theologians out there - how has the pursuit of truth changed today since Aquinas in theology and philosophy, for better or worse?
