Bernard of Clairvaux: Selected Works
Translated by G.R. Evans (Paulist Press, 1987)
"To love in this way is to become like God. As a drop of water seems to disappear completely in a quantity of wine, taking the wine's flavor and color; as red-hot iron becomes indistinguishable from the glow of fire and its own original form disappears; as air suffused with the light of the sun seems transformed into the brightness of the light, as if it were light itself, rather than merely lit up; so, in those who are holy, it is necessary for human affection to dissolve in some ineffable way, and be poured into the will of God. How will God be all in all (1 Cor 15:26) if anything of man remains in man? The substance remains, but in another form, another glory, another power." ~ On Loving God (196).
This book offers a wonderful collection of St. Bernard's treatises, sermons and letters, reflecting on a wide range of topics, like humility and pride, consideration (as compared with contemplation), loving God, and the Song of Songs. Perhaps his best known reflections are found in his sermons on the "kiss of the kiss" in the Song of Songs, metaphors of both the union of Christ's natures (human and divine) and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Bernard was a 12th century French Cistercian, Abbot of Clairvaux and a monk by vocation. His insights were sought by his fellow brothers, Pope Eugenius III (to whom On Consideration is addressed), and Cardinal deacon Aimeric of Rome (to whom On Loving God is addressed). He exchanged letters with such historical figures as Ailred of Rievaulx (12th century major author of Cistercian order) and Alexander of Lincoln (bishop).
As with many medieval greats, this volume is best read piecemeal, with enough time to thoughtfully reflect on moderate bits of his writings. Brief historical commentaries are provided at the beginning of each work, which help contextualize the readings. I recommend this for spiritually mature readers - the language and imagery can be quite intense for beginners. His audience(s) were also presumably well-formed in Church teaching and very familiar with Holy Scripture, both important for extracting the richness of his thoughts. Enjoy!
